Advent

What is Advent?

Advent is a season in the Christian calendar which refers both to the anticipation of Jesus Christ's birth, which we celebrated at Christmas and also the expectation of Jesus' second coming. The word 'Advent' comes from the Latin word 'adventus', meaning coming or arrival.

The Advent season

The Advent season begins on the 4th Sunday before Christmas and lasts until Christmas Eve. This means it usually starts in late November or early December. Each week of Advent highlights a spiritual theme such as Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love.

Advent traditions

There are some traditions associated with Advent such as an Advent wreath which is a circle of evergreen branches with four candles, or an Advent crown also with four candles. One candle is lit each week, symbolising a growing light as Christmas approaches. Advent calendars are also a popular tradition, especially with children and all chocolate lovers; the calendar counts down the days until Christmas day.

Happy Advent

May this season of Advent bring hope, peace, joy and love to fill your home and heart. Wishing you a blessed Advent.
